Marissa’s caregiving journey began during the pandemic in 2021 at just 35 when as a result of a pregnancy complication, her 3rd child, Brielle, was born at 25 weeks. What they thought would be a few months of growth and development, unfolded into a 225-day NICU stay during which they discovered Brielle would need a trach, would be ventilator-dependent for an extended period and would need a G-Tube. She’s grown tremendously since then, but her complex medical journey continues.

Adding to the Mayfield’s experience with Brielle was the birth of their 4th child, Melodie in 2023 who was born at 28 weeks due to the same pregnancy complication. Again, what they thought would be a few months of growth and development in the NICU evolved into another complex journey as Melodie was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and Down Syndrome two weeks after birth. In her first year of life, Melodie underwent two open heart surgeries and remains dependent on a G-Tube and oxygen. These experiences have had a major, life altering impact on Marissa and her family.

After her caregiving role expanded further in 2024 navigating sickness and elder care needs for her father, Marissa was inspired to start her podcast, It’s Giving Care. The channel is primarily geared towards millennials transitioning into or navigating caregiving roles for their children, parents and other loved ones. As someone in this position just a few years ago, Marissa can personally relate to the challenges of having to take on these big responsibilities while trying to live her best life!
